Free journalism will change society: Rushanara

LONDON: Rushanara Ali, the first British MP of Bangladeshi origin and Shadow Minister for International Development, said free journalism can change the society. 

The British lawmaker came up with the observation at a pre-iftar discussion organized by UK-Bangla Press Club at Sonargaon restaurant of East London on Wednesday (London local time).

“A politician expects journalists’ assistance to spread his political mission and vision to the people. The journalist community also has responsibility to bring society’s demand and real scenario to politicians’ attention,” said Rushanara.

She said the expansion of Bangla media in Britain is the recognition of the contribution of Bangalee community in mainstream British society.

Convener of UK-Bangla Press Club Reza Ahmed Foysol Chowdhury Shuyeb inaugurated the member collection programme before the discussion.

The discussion was also addressed, among others, by Deputy Mayor Councilor of Tower Hamlets Ohid Ahmed, Labour Party leader councilor of Tower Lamlets Jasua Pack, former leader of council Helal Uddin Abbas, mayor advisor Siraj Haque and senior journalist Aminul Haque Badsha.
